Know more about our Founder
Maryam is an inspirational young woman who began pursuing her entrepreneurial journey through the Youth Challenge International HerStart program. In her early years of entrepreneurship, Maryam was balancing a part-time job working reception at a hotel, while trying to run a small food business on the side. After spending 10 years working in the Zanzibar hospitality industry, Maryam was exposed to the lack of female presence in the tourism industry and the challenges that this created for both women in her community and also women tourists visiting Zanizbar.
Given that tourism is the #1 source of economic growth in Zanzibar, Maryam started developing a strong passion for an all-female tourism business that could bring equitable employment to young women in Zanzibar and also promote safe experiences for solo female travelers.
When Maryam came across the HerStart program, she recognized an opportunity to participate in entrepreneurial training, coaching, and even funding to transform her business from an idea to a reality. This did not come easy. Although Maryam strongly believed in herself and her idea, she was often discouraged by her friends who reminded her of the competitive nature of this male-dominated industry. Maryam didn’t let that stop her. She quit her job and decided to pursue her dream by joining HerStart’s program to sharpen her idea and gain a better understanding of how to grow her social venture. After conducting extensive research and learning from the challenges facing young girls in her community Maryam continued to expand her creative ideas for the structure of her business.

Currently, Maryam has a group of 10 young women who are eager and excited to become guides for Maryam Tours and Safaris. These talented and skilled young women can speak a variety of languages including German and French and with the hope to further develop her business Maryam wishes to gain the capacity to employ these women and show the world that Zanzibar strongly welcomes female solo travelers by local females.
In order to do this Maryam is looking for support. Maryam is looking to build a small team of management, strategic planning, and social media communications to help her further develop the business and make a real change for women and girls in Zanzibar.
